The Field Guide

Independent film distributors
the working list.

The indie distribution map keeps redrawing itself — theatrical windows collapse and re-expand, streamers open and close acquisition doors, and specialty labels rise where studios pull back. This is a working directory of the distributors most active in acquiring independent film today, organized by what they buy and how they release it. Written from the perspective of a financier that structures debt and orchestrates distribution — not a list to submit to blindly, a list to match against your picture.

Distributors sort by mandate long before they sort by budget. A $2M horror premiere sells into a different room than a $6M drama, even when the packages look similar on paper. Start with the release model the film needs, then the genre lane, then the specific label.

Before you submit

Every deal that closes cleanly closes on materials, not enthusiasm. Distributors move faster on pictures whose delivery is already ordered:

  1. Chain of title complete: writer, director, cast, music, footage, and financier releases.
  2. E&O insurance in place or quotable, with policy limits distributors expect ($1M/$3M is the common floor).
  3. Delivery bible ready: DCP, IMF or ProRes masters, M&E stems, dialogue lists, CCSL, artwork, key art PSDs.
  4. Rights unencumbered by pre-sold territories the distributor needs, or those carve-outs disclosed up front.
  5. Realistic MG expectations grounded in the film's genre, cast, and comparable recent titles.

How Eighteen88 fits

Eighteen88 structures collateralized debt facilities for independent film and helps orchestrate the distribution plan around the capital stack. When a distribution strategy — theatrical-led, streamer-first, or hybrid — is locked before financing closes, the picture, the collateral, and the release calendar all rhyme. That's what we underwrite for.
